CJI to undertake review of the use of Care and Supervision Units by the N.I. Prison Service

The Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice in Northern Ireland, Jacqui Durkin, has today (11 November) announced Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland (CJI) is to undertake a review of the use of Care and Supervision Units by the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS).

“I can confirm that a request to review the use of Care and Supervision Units by the Northern Ireland Prison Service has been received from the Minister of Justice.  I have agreed to incorporate this request within the scheduled CJI inspection programme for this year and as part of delivering our responsibilities as a member of the UK National Preventive Mechanism (NPM),” said Ms Durkin.
 
Preliminary discussions have commenced including with our partners in the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA).  Review terms of reference are being drafted and will be made publicly available when finalised.
