Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland has published the terms of reference it will use to carry out an inspection of the operational independence of the Office of the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland (OPONI) from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland (CJI) is to conduct a review of the operational independence of the Office of the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland from the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
 
The review is being carried out at the request of the Police Ombudsman, Al Hutchinson.
 
Dr Michael Maguire, Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice in Northern Ireland has met with the Police Ombudsman to discuss his concerns and work will commence immediately to draft Terms of Reference for the Inspectorate's work.  This information will be made public when it becomes available.
 
"This report will provide an impartial, evidence-based analysis of the relationship between the Police Ombudsman's Office and the Police Service of Northern Ireland. I will seek to publish the findings of my report by the end of June," said Dr Michael Maguire.
