Inspectorates acknowledge progress made by Coroners Service

Criminal Justice Inspection and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Court Administration (HMICA) have welcomed the progress made by the Coroners Service for Northern Ireland (CSNI) to improving the administrative services in place to support bereaved families in their latest inspection review. The review examined the progress made by the CSNI since it was originally inspected by HMICA in early 2007 when seven recommendations for improvement were made. Speaking following the publication of the report CJI’s Chief Inspector Dr Michael Maguire said: “This review shows that management and staff within the CSNI took on board the recommendations made by Inspectors to improve their organisation and have worked to deliver significant improvement in relation to how the Service engages with bereaved families.  Bereaved families now have the support and information they need to get through this difficult and emotional process.”

Dr Maguire’s words were echoed by Eddie Bloomfield, Chief Inspector with HMICA who commended the work of the CSNI’s Coroner’s Liaison Officers and the recently appointed Medical Officer.
